English: U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md. (May 19, 2003) - Daniel Shea, a U.S. Naval Academy freshman "Plebe," of Lake Hurst, N.Y., reaches for the white "dixie-cup” hat while climbing "Herndon", a 21-foot gray monument covered in more than 200 pounds of lard, to mark the end of plebe year. At the firing of cannons, the plebe class works together to attempt the climb up the lard-covered obelisk to retrieve a white plebe "dixie-cup” hat from the top of the monument as thousands of spectators watch. According to legend, the plebe who replaces the "dixie-cup” hat with a midshipman cover will become the first member of the class to become an admiral.
