Not semantic noise but semantic drift[редактиране на кода]

(Sorry this is in English, I was answering a colleague who gave this example in relation to semantic technologies).

IMHO this is not an example of semantic noise (mis-communicated meaning), but an example of semantic drift (changed meaning).

"Тарикат" has a well-known meaning in Bulgarian, known to at least 99% of the population (rare people would know the meaning Тарикат ("Tariqa") as explained in Wikipedia).

Other examples of semantic drift:

  • Wikipedia categories, where the longer a chain of super-categories, the further from the original meaning you get. We experienced this in the Europeana Food and Drink project, where eg we had to cut out 98% of the topics at distance 5 to collect meaningful topics
  • The development and evolution of a language through history, as studied by Diachronic (Historic) linguistics
  • The evolution of borrowings between languages, such as the example Tariqa->Тарикат

Whereas many languages have the analogy fish->balik (fish never learn not to take the bait), I think the drift Tariqa (highly spiritual person) -> Тарикат is uniquely Bulgarian, and speaks a lot about the psyche of our people (ala Ivan Hadzhijski).

Тарикат has two meanings in Bulgarian:

  • схватлив (smart person)
  • мошеник (swindler)

This is also troubling in regards to our psyche: the counter-point of these two meanings is that if you are straight and law-abiding, then you are stupid.
